Tenure-Track Positions in Algebra and Topology with emphasis in Number Theory

Department of Mathematics, Instituto Superior Técnico – University of Lisbon

The Department of Mathematics at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, invites Expressions of Interest (EoI) from outstanding researchers in Number Theory who aspire to build an internationally recognized research career and establish a dynamic research program at IST.

This initiative seeks to identify outstanding researchers and promising research directions in Number Theory. Based on the outcome of this process and the subsequent institutional approval procedures, international calls may be launched in 2027 for the recruitment of tenure-track faculty, at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

The new professors are expected to join CAMGSD (Center for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Dynamical Systems) and contribute to its scientific mission. Learn more about the Department of Mathematics at math.tecnico.ulisboa.pt.

Candidates should have a strong research record and demonstrate the potential for scientific leadership, international collaboration, supervision of graduate students, and success in attracting competitive research funding.

Candidate Profile

Prospective candidates should hold a doctoral degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, or a closely related field by the date of the future formal competition.

A strong research record, international experience, and university-level teaching experience will be valued. Candidates should demonstrate the capacity to establish international scientific collaborations and to develop an externally funded research program.

Excellent command of English is required. Knowledge of Portuguese is not required at the application stage but is expected one year after being hired.

About the Department of Mathematics and IST

The Department of Mathematics of Instituto Superior Técnico provides a stimulating environment for fundamental and applied mathematical research and interacts closely with the broad scientific and engineering community of IST.

The Department participates in teaching across a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs and is associated with active research groups covering several areas of pure and applied mathematics.

Instituto Superior Técnico is the largest school of Architecture, Engineering, Science and Technology of the University of Lisbon. Its multidisciplinary environment provides particularly favorable conditions for research at the interface between mathematics, computation, science and engineering.

This Expression of Interest is not a formal job application and does not guarantee the opening of a tenure-track or permanent position.

Any faculty position resulting from this process will be subject to the formal approval procedures of Instituto Superior Técnico and to a subsequent open international competition, in accordance with Portuguese law and the applicable university regulations.

Interested researchers are invited to submit the following documents, as PDF files:

  1. Motivation letter (maximum one page): Describing your main research interests and how you would contribute to the development of the area at IST.
  2. Curriculum vitae: Including a complete list of publications.
  3. Achievements and publications (maximum two pages): Your three most significant scientific achievements and up to five particularly relevant publications from the past five years, explaining your specific contribution.
  4. Research and teaching statement (maximum two pages): A concise presentation of future research plans and teaching interests, including possible connections with existing research activities at IST.
  5. References: the names and email addresses of 1 to 3 researchers or professors willing to provide reference letters. We write to them directly; you do not need to collect the letters yourself.
